- Gain confidence in managing a project by working on a project plan simulation that is representative of a project you will need to manage in your organization.
- Recognize what competency requirements may be necessary for your project and how to select the best project manager and team members.
- Understand the Project Life Cycle from project definition to close
- Develop a communication strategy that keeps the project team, project sponsor and other stakeholders happy.
- Identify and manage the critical path of the project.
- Develop a budget for the project and a breakdown of the costs to the lowest level of activity possible.
- Manage all the expenditures within the project's budget.
- Determine all the project milestones.
- Create a full risk management plan including contingencies.
- Manage project changes throughout the project
- Learn and apply the Project Management Institute's (PMI) Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and the ISO 10006: 2003 Guidelines for Quality
- Determine and Agree on the project team roles.
- Identify project stakeholders
- Anticipate what may be required to maintain a customer focus with the project and deliver to required quality standards.
- Understand how to work with vendors and suppliers on the development of the project scope and project plan as well as throughout the execution of the project.
- Develop project scope, the project plan, a project change management plan and a project risk management plan.
- Delegate effectively to resources responsible for completion of some aspects of the project plan but who many not be on the core project team.
- Ensure project tasks include duration and scheduling parameters.
- Identify all project task dependencies.
- Find out what is available in project management software and when to use it.
- Present and report to management on the project's progress.
- Implement the project plan successfully.
- Close and evaluate the project upon completion.
- Conduct a project close-out meeting
- Create a method of archiving and retaining information learned from the project for others that follow.
